A lot of claptrap gets written about sons' relations with their fathers; some of the claptrap is even true. It seems possible, for instance, that George W. Bush decided to "take out" Saddam Hussein because the Iraqi dictator was implicated in a plot to kill Bush's father during a 1993 visit to Kuwait.

So as Governor Mitt Romney contemplates a presidential run in 2008, it is worth asking: Who was Mitt's father, George Romney, and why did he fail in his own bid for the presidency in 1968?
