"I UNDERSTAND THE importance of closure to my family, friends, and
supporters," Martha Stewart declared 10 days ago as she told the
world she was ready for her stint in the slammer. She's not the only
one, these days, who's aware of the importance of closure. A dozen
years after the word was first denounced in print as psychobabble,
its detractors say *closure remains a blight on the lexicon of loss.
Worse, some say, it is edging out closing in non-therapeutic
contexts. Local TV announcers, a friend writes, are "prattling on
about closures of area churches." Another reader e-mails, "I wonder ...
