The reputation of Chablis, one the world's great wines, has been smeared ever since the California wine industry stole the name.

The wine takes its name from the small village of Chablis, about 100 miles southeast of Paris. The vineyards surrounding the village produce only white wine and, since it is part of Burgundy, only from chardonnay.

California wineries capitalized on Chablis' popularity and name recognition by labeling their inexpensive jug white wines Chablis. It mattered not that California Chablis, sometimes redundantly labeled "white chablis," contained no chardonnay.
