PRAGUE - By the time we reached Prague, what covered the walls
of the ancient Pinkas Synagogue, just minutes from the city's
bustling Old Town, shouldn't have stunned us. But it did: some 80,000
names, all of them painted onto a white background, one after the
other, row after row, individuals and entire families, the
communities to which they belonged, ghostly reminders of the long-
ago dead, refusing to be forgotten.
These were the Czech Jews of Bohemia and Moravia who died at the
hands of the Nazis.
