Dr. Herbert S. Cline might well have become an ear, nose, and throat specialist like his father had not the Army persuaded him to become a psychiatrist.

As a first lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps during the Korean War, Dr. Cline, who already had a placement at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, was assigned to a hospital in Germany to care for soldiers with emotional problems. He realized, then, where his true calling was.

His choice was psychiatry's gain, colleagues said.
