VARIED CHANTS TRANSCEND CENTURIES

CAMBRIDGE - Chant wars raged throughout Europe in the ninth
century as the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne sought to impose
uniformity on the singing of chants in all the churches of his
empire.
Chant wars may rage again in the 21st century because of the work
that musicologists and performers Benjamin Bagby and Katarina
Livljanic have undertaken to investigate the various traditions of
chant that existed in the time of Charlemagne and that survived
attempts to suppress them.
