The Boston Symphony Orchestra has a new principal flutist. Elizabeth Rowe, 29, will take up the position at the start of next season.

There were 251 applicants for the chair formerly held by Jacques Zoon, who took an 18-month leave of absence in 2001 and then, early last year, decided not to return. The final auditions were held in the presence of music director designate James Levine and a committee of 12 players last month.
