JOHN TOLAND; WON PULITZER AS `TELLER OF TALES' OF WWII

John Toland, whose popular histories of the World War II era were
best sellers in the 1960s and 1970s and whose 1970 book, "The Rising
Sun," won the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction, died Sunday of pneumonia
in Danbury, Conn. A Danbury resident, he was 91.
"I belong to no school of history," Mr. Toland wrote in a 1990
issue of The Journal of Historical Review. "I'm not a conventional
historian, but primarily a teller of tales without thesis. I deal
with history's human side, portraying history through the experiences
of participants of all ranks."
