The brilliant planet Mars continues to shine bold and yellow in the evening sky this month. But there's more going on in its vicinity than you might guess.

Close to Mars in the sky, though far in the background, lurks larger but much dimmer Uranus. An ordinary pair of binoculars will show both planets in the same field of view: one a dazzling blaze, the other a faint, starlike speck. This lucky alignment, which lasts for the next couple of weeks or so, offers a chance to try an interesting bit of astronomy that you might never have imagined you could do.
