They show up in Jewish homes every year in December: four-sided spinning tops called dreidels that fit in a child's hand. They are made of clay, paper, or 21st-century plastic; each side is embossed with a Hebrew letter, and the four characters together form the abbreviation for Nes gadol hayah sham, or "A great miracle happened there."

You can buy dreidels at a store or do as the second-graders do at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston: Make your own.
