EVEN BEFORE AL GORE endorsed Howard Dean's presidential candidacy
last week, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof thought Dean was
sounding too eggheady. Dean had admitted that the flap over his pitch
to pickup-truck-driving, Confederate-flag-waving Southerners was a
"huge contretemps," Kristof noted Dec. 6 - "and I seriously doubt
that anybody who publicly uses the word `contretemps' can ever be
elected president."
