Andrew Bergman, the antihero of this dark comedy, is a sort of slacker-generation Job. He has spent an aimless decade hanging around a Midwestern college town without earning a degree. He is perpetually underachieving and serially unemployed. He has been a drunk and has dried out, though not with much conviction. When he finds a woman, Isabel, who actually seems to care for him, her teenage sons try to buy him off, so convinced are they that if this loser sticks around, he'll be a train wreck for their mother. From these unpromising beginnings, things really start to go downhill.
