AMIDST THE NEWS of looting and book-burning in Baghdad, little has been said about a considerable loss to music history.

The Iraqi National Museum contained two examples of the earliest- known stringed instrument in the history of the world. The instrument may be familiar to Boston-area residents from the mural on the Brookline Street side of the Middle East music club in Cambridge's Central Square. That big gold bull-headed thing?
