The cautionary advice comes from a technician looping an odd- looking microphone/tracking device around the neck of William Mitchell as he settles behind a podium for an evening lecture at MIT. Mitchell, unfazed by the warning, nods as he reviews his notes.

Tonight's lecture topic is straightforward: "Sustaining Creative Communities." But because this is MIT and William Mitchell, the presentation is far from simple.

There is the audience in Cambridge, of course, but two additional lecture halls, located at two different universities ...
