A lawyer representing Natick's deputy fire chief, Gene Sabourin, has accused the town of a "blatant violation" of civil service law, saying the Board of Selectmen failed to justify its 2001 decision to appoint James M. Brien as fire chief despite his lower score on the civil service exam.

Brien scored a 79, seven points lower than Sabourin.
