SEOUL - North Korea said yesterday that it had begun reprocessing spent nuclear fuel rods that can be used to make atomic bombs, but US officials suggested that the statement might have been mistranslated.

In what would be a dramatic escalation in its six-month nuclear standoff, North Korea's official KCNA news agency issued a statement in English saying Pyongyang was "successfully reprocessing" more than 8,000 spent fuel rods.
