Portraits Bring Lees' Past to Life

After almost a century, the Thomas Sully portraits of
Elizabeth Blair Lee and her husband, Rear Adm. Samuel Phillips Lee,
are home again. The paintings give faces to the past of the
president's guest house.
On his presentation of the portraits to Blair House not long
ago, J. Wayne Lee, a Philadelphia Realtor, introduced his forebears
by walking over to the demurely beautiful Elizabeth and pointing to
a spot on her throat. "It's been touched up," he said, "but the
family story goes that a lady friend of the admiral's stuck her
hatpin in the painting, just there."
