The story of how Bill and Kristen Golden saved the last of
Nantucket's fabled lightships from the scrap heap, lavishly restored
it, and finally brought it to its new home at Rowes Wharf in Boston
might never be told were it not for a piece of sushi.
A bet was made at a Christmas party, Bill Golden recalled, where
he and his wife were trying to persuade their friend, Stan Elkerton,
to try raw fish. "Bet him you'll live on a boat if he eats the
sushi," Kristen Golden said. Bill, who had never acted upon his dream
of owning a houseboat, agreed, and Elkerton downed the fish.
