NEW YORK - In the mid-to-late 20th century, the Martha Graham
Dance Company was considered by many to be the finest modern troupe
in the country, perhaps in the world, while the New York City Ballet
was judged by many to hold the same rank in classical ballet.
Both companies are currently performing in the city where they
were born: The Graham troupe ends its season at the Joyce Theater
today; City Ballet dances at the New York State Theater through March
