ABBA EBAN, DEAN OF DIPLOMACY FOR ISRAEL, DIES AT 87

JERUSALEM - Abba Eban, one of Israel's founding fathers and a supreme diplomat who helped persuade nations of the world to support the establishment of a Jewish state, died yesterday after years of failing health, hospital officials said. He was 87.

The Cambridge-educated Eban, who served as an ambassador, a Cabinet minister in successive governments, and a longtime member of Parliament, was recognized internationally as a brilliant statesman and dazzling orator.
