ZONING BOARD OK'S HERBICIDE USE IN LAKE, POND

The debate over whether a herbicide should be used to control weeds at Lost Lake and Knopps Pond continued last week as the Zoning Board of Appeals agreed with its agent that the use of the chemical by the Groton Lakes Association is not a zoning violation.

The 3-to-2 decision came after Planning Board members offered a 90- minute presentation to underscore their belief that the herbicide diquat is harmful and had migrated from Lost Lake and Knopps Pond to Whitney Pond, a primary water source for the town.
