On Sept. 20, political commentator David Gergen summed up the significance of President Bush's stirring anti terrorism speech before a joint session of Congress.

"This was the night that George W. Bush took command as a leader," Gergen told Chris Matthews on "Hardball," "the night Prince Hal became Henry V."

Talking heads nodded at the similarities between Bush and Britain's warrior-king - a bad-boy boozer and laggard who rose to the role of statesman at a time of crisis. The American punditocracy has bandied about the likeness since.
