SANTIAGO, Chile - Neighboring Argentina has spiraled into economic and political chaos. Uruguay's economy has started to unravel. And many fear that Brazil, the largest country in Latin America, may soon follow.

But Chile - known for copper and wine - has managed to avoid what economists call the "contagion" that has infected the region, mostly because US businesses are continuing to invest in Chile.
