EX-JUSTICE BYRON WHITE DIES AT 84
|
Byron R. White, who during 31 years as an associate justice of the
Supreme Court moved rightward along with the court majority, died in
Denver yesterday of complications from pneumonia. He was 84.
"He came as close as anyone I have known to meriting Matthew
Arnold's description of Sophocles," Chief Justice William H.
Rehnquist said yesterday: Justice White " `saw life steadily and saw
it whole.' "
"If there is one adjective that never could, never would, be
applied to Byron White, it is wishy-washy," Justice Antonin Scalia
said in a prepared statement. "You always knew where he stood."
