CAMBRIDGE - A public elementary school named after a 19th century scientist who claimed blacks were inferior to whites will be renamed the Maria Baldwin School in honor of the first African-American woman to lead the school, the school committee voted last night.

The name Louis Agassiz will be removed from the school as soon as possible under the vote, which was 6-0, with Alfred Fantini absent.
