DALY'S WORK A HIGH NOTE IN WORLD OF BARITONE SAX

The baritone saxophone probably has more in common with the tuba
or the French horn than with the other saxes. It's got a big, deep
sound, and people tend to love it or hate it.
The way Claire Daly plays it, it's easy to love. Her music sounds
the way jazz used to, back when Pepper Adams was blowing hard bop on
the baritone, back when Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon were the
titans of the tenor. Daly, in fact, sounds more like Rollins and
Gordon than like baritone legend Gerry Mulligan, whose soft, cool
sound brought, for once, the baritone into the mainstream.
