Patriarch Dimitrios I, 77; leader of 300 million Eastern Orthodox

ISTANBUL -- Patriarch Dimitrios I, spiritual leader of the world's 300 million Eastern Orthodox Christians and a champion of Christian unity, died yesterday of a heart attack, his doctor said.

The 77-year-old primate had been in the intensive care unit of the American Admiral Bristol hospital since Monday after suffering a seizure.

A spokesman for the see of the Eastern Orthodox Church, Father Basil, said church leaders would meet soon to decide the date of Patriarch Dimitrios' funeral and "discuss the whole situation resulting from the death of his Holiness."
