A state treasure, WPA era murals are hit by neglect
|
PETERBOROUGH -- The painting crew was moments away from
obliterating the old mural over Postmaster Bill Chapfield's door when
counter clerk Tom Heddy stopped them. By speaking up, Heddy saved a
public treasure.
Standard-sized paintings by Marguerite Zorach, the mural's
creator, sell for up to $90,000. Her 1938 Peterborough mural "New
Hampshire Post in Winter" measures about 12 feet by 4 feet.
Zorach was one of a legion of artists commissioned during the
Depression by the federal government to create public works of art.
