WASHINGTON -- Key Senate Democrats predicted yesterday that the
collapse of the Bank of New England will claim its first Washington
victim next week when the nation's senior banking regulator comes up
for confirmation to a second five-year term.
Legislators said that Comptroller of the Currency Robert L.
Clarke will face tough questioning over his agency's failure to
control the multibillion Boston-based bank before it spun out of
financial control last January. The collapse is expected to be the
third most expensive in US history, costing the fund that insures the
