In Cambridge, a granite plaque purports to pinpoint the spot where Leif Ericsson built a house 1,000 years ago, while Weston boasts a 30-foot tower erected a century ago so tourists could get a bird's eye peek at remnants "of a once-thriving Viking colony." No shred of archeological evidence has ever surfaced to back up either assertion.

Claims that an old stone tower in Newport, R.I., was Viking-built were debunked decades ago, but part-time Viking scholars continue to speculate that the structure is genuine Norse, a theory that the local tourist bureau is happy to keep alive.
