SALEM -- Yesterday morning, three replica viking ships sailing from the previous millenium were anchored off Great Misery Island trying to keep a secret.

Saga Siglar, Gaia and Oseberg are touring the North American coast to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Leif Ericsson's voyage. They had just sailed into American waters from Halifax, Nova Scotia, some unexpectedly favorable winds putting them three days ahead of schedule. They did not want to spoil tomorrow's welcome celebration in Boston Harbor.

So there was time to kill and there were chores to do to get things shipshape. Misery Island ...
