`Lord Byron,' Thomson's ill-fated opera, to be performed in N.H.

" `Lord Byron' is a perfectly good opera," Virgil Thomson liked
to say, in his matter-of-fact voice.
Now the public will have a chance to hear whether Thomson was
right, for Monadnock Music under the direction of James Bolle will
present a complete concert performance of Thomson's ill-fated opera
on Saturday in Pine Hill Hall in Wilton, N.H.
Thomson ought to have known whether "Lord Byron" is any good. He
was the most astute music critic this country has ever produced, and
one reason he was a great critic was that he was also an experienced
and original composer who had produced two operas ...
