As lemurs go, so goes the island's ecosystem

Two years ago, after weeks of searching in the malarial rain
forest of northeast Madagascar, German primatologist Bernhard Meier
found the hairy-eared dwarf lemur in a hole in a tree.
Allocebus trichotis, just three ounces in weight and five inches
long (not including the tail), is the last surviving species of what
had been an entire genus, or sub-group, of lemurs. The lemur had
been presumed extinct, but Meier set out to find it because an old
man in a village nearby told him it still lived.
As exhilirating as was the rediscovery in 1989, it came with a
