Choosing the most ignominious moment in the stained history of the
elected Boston School Committee is a daunting task by any measure,
but it may have come on a December day in 1974 when member John J.
Kerrigan mimicked a chimpanzee as he described ABC-TV correspondent
Lem Tucker, who was black.
"He's one generation from swinging in the trees," Kerrigan leered.
"I bet he loves bananas."
