Suspicions of fraud shut down BCCI's world operations
|
WASHINGTON -- The international operations of the scandal-plagued
Bank of Commerce and Credit International, once the fourth-largest
financial institution in the world, were shut down yesterday because
of suspicions in England of massive fraud.
In an unprecedented coordinated action, the bank's assets were
seized in the eight countries where it has its largest operations:
England, Canada, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Switzerland and the
Cayman Islands. In addition, the bank's operations in California and
New York, which were being supervised by the Federal Reserve Bank
