From the standpoint of history, Zachary Taylor's exhumation and examination for possible poison may have been a good career move. His nickname was "Rough and Ready" and most historians conclude that the 12th US president, hero of the Mexican War and the last successful Whig nominee for president, was more rough than ready.

Some historians blame him for prolonging the Mexican War for his own glory. Although a county coroner in Kentucky said that Taylor died of natural causes 141 years ago, Ralph Waldo Emerson said the war itself poisoned America. "The United States will conquer Mexico," ...
