Chinese Art's Pot of Gold; Critics Howl, but Shanghai's New Museum Embodies the City's Cosmopolitan Goals

The Shanghai Museum possesses one of China's finest art collections, a savvy director and enviable connections with government officials and foreign donors. But for nearly three years it has lacked one thing a museum really needs: a building.

Now it has one. Last month the museum reopened in a new $70 million building in People's Square, in the heart of the city, thus bringing some of the country's best pieces of art out of storage and into a modern exhibit space. Though work continues on the structure, three of the 14 galleries are now open.
