PROVIDENCE -- The descendants of Julia Ward Howe are asking mothers and children across the nation today to cast aside the sappy sentiment, candy and cards that often characterize Mother's Day and to try instead to revive the day's original meaning.

Back in 1872, Julia Ward Howe founded it as a "Mother's Day for Peace."

"It's dreadful, the way her idea has been subverted and commercialized," said Howe's great-granddaughter, Rosalind Wiggins, 74, at her home in Providence. She showed a book of Howe's writings, including an impassioned appeal to women of the world to gather on Mother's Day to ...
