In 1943 a young German soldier named Joseph Beuys was shot down while flying a dive bomber over the Crimea. Nomadic Tatars discovered the injured and unconscious pilot lying in deep snow and revived him with traditional healing practices -- rubbing animal fat on his wounds and wrapping his body in felt to keep it warm.
