Hussein hopes to drop in for a win Spurred by his dropping out last year, '88 champion wants to regain laurels

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- When he closes his eyes and his mind drifts, Ibrahim Hussein has no trouble imagining he is back in his native Kenya. The ground beneath his feet is firm and tightly woven. The air is thin.

It is a world so totally fresh and pure that one can forget that the desert heat and Phoenix glare is just three hours down the road.

"But what you have to remember," says Hussein, winner of the 1988 Boston Marathon, "was that I was born at 5,000 feet at Kenya, and this all seems natural to me. The altitude is about the same here, and I feel very comfortable.
