Talking with Julie Harris, who is intensely private, takes great concentration, restraint, patience -- takes, in effect, a kind of polite nonjournalistic decorum. Questions quickly put are suspect, hesitated over -- sometimes briefly, sometimes longer -- as though being searched for hidden agenda. Harris' animation when she talks about theater is unmistakable, but it can suddenly shy if she's pressed for, say, a comparison or a complaint.
