Russell G. Oswald, prisons chief during Attica uprising in N.Y.

Russell G. Oswald, the Massachusetts corrections commissioner from 1955 to 1957 and the New York State corrections commissioner at the time of the Attica uprising, died Friday at Saint Peter's Hospital in Albany, N.Y.

Born in Racine, Wis., Mr. Oswald received a law degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee and a master's degree in psychiatric social work from Loyola University in Chicago.

He was also the former corrections commissioner in Wisconsin and a chairman of the New York State Division of Parole.
