Blooming Witch Hazel; A Harbinger of Spring When We Need It Most

Few plants are as obliging as the witch hazel, bursting into
fragrant bloom when we need it most.
The common witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) blooms in late
fall, just as winter is about to descend. It is one of two American
witch hazels in cultivation.
In late winter, the ones to admire are a group of hybrids from
the Chinese and Japanese witch hazels, the most famous of which is
Arnold Promise. Often mistakenly named Arnold's Promise, it has
showy golden-yellow flowers that bloom in late February or early
