Collier at top of list MacPherson eyes him for defense

Dick MacPherson and the Patriots could return to their American Football League roots to fill out their coaching staff with hirings that appear inconceivably ironic, though they are directly from the network.

When MacPherson was announced as the Patriots' 11th head coach Monday, he said his first order of business will be to hire a defensive staff. And he plans to start with Joe Collier, who, like MacPherson, was brought into professional football by the original Patriots coach -- Lou Saban.

Collier will bring along defensive line coach Stan Jones, a former All-Pro lineman who also coached ...
