Flute choir hits high notes on many Bay Area stages

PACIFICA -- When Gail Edwards' flute students get hung up on the fingering or rhythm of a song, her advice is to "just be free and play it as if you were singing."

The allusion to singing is not incidental. When Edwards' flute choirs perform in Pacifica or San Francisco, they play songs vocalists sometimes perform -- songs like George Gershwin's "Summertime" or "Morning is Broken." Other times their flutes stand in for a full orchestra, the delicate interplay of sounds evoking the complex layers of woodwinds, strings, and brass.
