Midwest chief asked rival about purchase; Amid AirTran threat, he turned to Northwest

Facing a hostile takeover bid that was gaining momentum, Midwest
Air Group Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Timothy Hoeksema
in June called an unlikely ally - a once-bitter rival who would
emerge as a white knight.
Hoeksema reached out to his counterpart at Northwest Airlines
Corp., the No. 2 carrier at Mitchell International Airport, which
just a few years ago tried to smash Midwest Air's dominant position
in Milwaukee.
Hoeksema first contacted CEO Doug Steenland in early June to
discuss Northwest's interest in a possible transaction. He made a
follow-up call to Steenland on June 22 ...
