A Marylander to Honor; Remember Hugh Lennox Bond, Not Roger B. Taney

Marylanders today understand that Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney made a horrible decision in Dred Scott, the 1857 Supreme Court ruling that declared African Americans ineligible for citizenship. If we could do it all over again, we would probably not erect the sculpted images of Taney that previous generations planted on public ground in Annapolis and Frederick.

But rather than tearing down those pieces of history, as some have suggested, the state ought to build monuments to Marylanders who stood for the freedom that Dred Scott denied. The 1995 installation of a statue of Justice ...
