The pitcher plant, a carnivorous bog plant that is losing its
natural habitat, is being promoted as a perennial for the home
garden. Now at its year-end glory, the plant needs a wet, acidic
site. A specialty nursery in Chapel Hill, N.C., Niche Gardens
(919-967-0078), will introduce the second in a series of new pitcher
plant hybrids next spring. Named Ladies in Waiting, the plant's
16-inch pitcher is deep maroon at the top, surrounding white spots.
The cost is $20 plus shipping. It is a robust hybrid similar to one
of its parents, the white trumpet pitcher plant.
