Homeowners and licensed contractors can apply online for postcard permits from the D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs. The department's new permits allow customers to file for work within certain limitations.

Postcard permits are not accepted for work on the exterior of buildings or structures in historic and fine arts districts, or on historically designated structures. Permits that require approval by boards or government agencies also cannot be applied for online.
