Legendary vessel to be part of sesquicentennial Mass; Pere Marquette's reputed silver chalice to be used in high school service

A bookseller might call this tale "Pre Jacques Marquette and the Mystery of the Silver Chalice."

Some Jesuits say the history of the gleaming vessel that will be used to celebrate Marquette University High School's 150th anniversary Mass today goes back to Father Marquette. Some add the caveat "maybe."

The famed 17th-century missionary and explorer might have used it as he converted Indians in the Upper Midwest. But it might have been made well after Marquette's time.

Its legend began with the late Monsignor Patrick Dunigan, a Detroit diocesan priest who told it in an autobiography ...
